Word Search Tips: 7 Simple Strategies That Help

Everyone gets stuck on one last word now and then. These are the techniques experienced solvers use — none of them require speed, just a method.

1. Start with unusual letters

Letters like Q, Z, X, J and K are rare in the grid's filler letters. If a word on your list contains one, scan the grid for that letter first. Finding a Q in a sea of vowels is far faster than reading row by row.

2. Use the word's shape

You do not need to read every letter. A long word like SUNFLOWER has a distinctive outline. Scan for the pattern — clusters like double letters (the LL in BALLOON) or unusual pairs (like CK or PH) give a word a visible "shape" even at a glance.

3. Sweep in one direction at a time

Instead of hunting one word everywhere, take one word and sweep the grid row by row looking only for its first letter, checking all eight directions whenever you find it. Then do the same column by column. A systematic sweep guarantees the word has nowhere left to hide.

4. Work the diagonals deliberately

Diagonal words are the ones beginners miss most. When a word refuses to be found, assume it runs diagonally and scan the grid corner-to-corner rather than straight across.

5. Fill in found words firmly

Marking found words clearly (a firm line or highlight) shrinks the visual noise. The remaining unmarked letters become a smaller puzzle, and the missing words stand out.

6. Read the list backwards

If you are looking for WAITRESS, remember it might be placed as SSERTIAW. When scanning, keep the reversed spelling in mind — your eye learns to spot either form.

7. Take a break

It sounds simple, but it works: after a few minutes away, the one stubborn word often jumps out immediately. Fresh eyes reset the patterns you had locked onto.

Our puzzles hide eight words per grid, all placed in straight lines — the tips above are all you need. Try them on today's puzzle or pick a favourite theme from the word search collection.
